CONHECENDO OS SINTOMAS DEPRESSIVOS NO IDOSO: UM ESTUDO TRANSVERSAL
RECOGNIZING DEPRESSIVE SYMPTOMS IN THE ELDERLY: A CROSS SECTIONAL STUDY

ABSTRACT
The research investigated the depressive symptoms in the aged and for that followed the methodological approach of a cross-sectional study with a quantitative approach. Interviews were conducted with 30 aged Long-stay Institution for the Aged (LSIA) Home of Providence Carneiro da Cunha, randomly chosen after obedience to the inclusion criteria: age less than 60 years; have cognitive conditions to respond to the collection instrument: Geriatric Depression Scale abbreviated a form with sociodemographic questions of the subjects. After the development of data collection, the results analyzed using descriptive statistics and arranged in table showed high rates of depression in the aged said LSIA. But even still in the mild degree, urges early diagnosis of depression, especially in closed services, where the prevalence of this pathology is even greater. Therefore, it is beneficial to make use of instruments, such as the mentioned range, for easy identification and therapeutic intervention in due time. Finally, the study pointed out the need to creation of programs for institutionalized aged, in order to promote investments in welfare and social movements and involvement with cultural activities, sports and leisure, aiming to achieve a reduction of depressive symptoms in this group.
