IMPORTANCE OF CAPILLARY GLYCEMIA IN DIABETIC PATIENTS WITH ACUTE PATHOLOGY
Resumo
ABSTRACT
Objectives: This study aimed to verify the importance of control the blood glucose values in diabetic patients hospitalized for acute pathology, in an adult Observation Service (OS) of a Portuguese Emergency Service. Methods: Primary exploratory descriptive and retrospective study involving 109 patients, between January 1 and September 30 of 2014. Data were collected during one week following the guidelines of a data collection protocol, and were inserted in an Excel sheet, allowing the statistical analysis. Results: The highest values of blood glucose and the presence of hypoglycemia, correlated with an increased need for hospitalization and higher patient’s mortality. Conclusions: We conclude that the control of capillary glycemia in diabetic patients hospitalized for acute pathology is of utmost importance, to ensure their best outcome.
